What is Dam 999?

Dam 999 is a co-production between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and India, produced by BizTV Network, UAE and directed by Sohan Roy. The film is based on the award-winning short documentary DAMs - The Lethal Water Bombs, and the Banqiao dam disaster of 1975 that claimed the lives of 250,000 people in China and anticipated calamity for outdated dams in the world.

The story revolves around nine characters portraying nine variants of emotion (Navarasa) and an outdated dam. The story starts with Vinay (Vinay Rai), who is a mariner and works in ships. One day he visits his native place, somewhere in Kerala, with his son Sam (Jineeth Rath) to meet his father Shankaran (Rajit Kapur). Shankaran is a village doctor or 'Vaidyan' and is also a master in astrology and the ancient sciences. Sam is a diabetic and Vinay wanted to have him treated by his grandfather. Another storyline is that of the orphan Meera (Vimala Raman), who has been staying with Shankaran since her childhood, treated as his own daughter and who helps him treat various patients. Vinay and Meera share a special bond and love each other. When Shankaran studies their horoscopes, he learns that whenever they would express their love towards each other, something terrible would happen. Learning this Meera sacrifices her love, and thus Vinay marries Sandra (Linda Arsenio) who is a TV journalist. Now after a long time when Vinay returns home with his son, his special bond with Meera develops again with Meera reciprocating the feeling as well. On a parallel track, a corrupt Mayor - Durai (Ashish Vidyarthi) - is fighting an issue of an old dam in his area. Towards the end a leak is discovered inside the dam, and when a heavy storm and rains hit on the same day, a catastrophe occurs. The dam breaks and the water level in the river rises, threatening the lives of millions. The film ends with a thrilling climax, where the characters have to face their fate and emotions.

The film was released in both 2-D and 3-D formats on November 25, 2011 in India, UAE, US, and UK. The film was also dubbed in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam languages. The film features a soundtrack composed by Ouseppachan and lyrics penned by Sohan Roy. The film also has a theme song sung by Shakira and composed by A.R. Rahman.

Why is Dam 999 Controversial?

Ban in Tamil Nadu

The film faced a lot of controversy and opposition in Tamil Nadu, where it was banned by the state government on November 23, 2011, two days before its release. The reason behind the ban was that the film allegedly depicted the Mullaperiyar Dam issue, which is a long-standing dispute between Tamil Nadu and Kerala over the water sharing and safety of the dam.

The Mullaperiyar Dam is located on the Periyar River in Kerala, but is operated and maintained by Tamil Nadu under a lease agreement signed in 1886. Tamil Nadu uses the water from the dam for irrigation and power generation in its districts. Kerala claims that the dam is old and unsafe, and poses a threat to the lives of millions of people living downstream in case of a collapse. Kerala also wants to build a new dam in place of the existing one, which Tamil Nadu opposes.

The ban on Dam 999 was imposed after various political parties and groups in Tamil Nadu protested against the film, alleging that it was biased towards Kerala and portrayed Tamil Nadu in a negative light. They also claimed that the film was an attempt to influence the Supreme Court's verdict on the Mullaperiyar Dam case, which was pending at that time.

The filmmakers denied any connection between Dam 999 and Mullaperiyar Dam, and said that the film was based on a universal theme of human emotions and disasters. They also said that they had no intention to hurt anyone's sentiments or create any controversy. They appealed to the Supreme Court to lift the ban on their film, but their plea was rejected.

Criticism and Lawsuits

Apart from the ban in Tamil Nadu, Dam 999 also received criticism and lawsuits from various quarters for its content and quality. The film was panned by critics and audiences alike for its poor script, direction, acting, editing, and visual effects. The film was rated 3.7 out of 10 on IMDb and 1 out of 5 on Rotten Tomatoes . The film was also nominated for eight Golden Raspberry Awards (Razzies) in 2012, including Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Screenplay, Worst Actor (Vinay Rai), Worst Actress (Vimala Raman), Worst Supporting Actor (Ashish Vidyarthi), Worst Supporting Actress (Linda Arsenio), and Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-off or Sequel. However, it did not win any of them.

The film also faced legal troubles from various sources for its alleged plagiarism and defamation. The makers of the Hollywood film 2012 filed a lawsuit against Dam 999 for copying their poster design and tagline ("The end is near"). The descendants of John Pennycuick, a British engineer who built the Mullaperiyar Dam, filed a lawsuit against Dam 999 for defaming their ancestor's name and legacy. The Kerala High Court issued a notice to Dam 999 for showing an incorrect map of India in its opening credits. The Indian Censor Board also objected to some scenes and dialogues in the film that were deemed offensive or provocative.
