Of the game controllers available for home computers, only a few are officially supported on the Mac, but you can often get others, like those for the PS3, Wii, or Xbox, working just fine. To use any of these controllers with your system, you will first need to connect it to your system physically, and then install a driver package to make use of the controller's inputs.
For factory-supported devices like the Logitech F310 Gamepad and the Belkin Nostromo SpeedPad, drivers are available from their manufacturers; however, for unsupported devices like Wii Remote, PS3, and Xbox controllers, you will have to use a third-party driver package.
Once the gaming controller is connected, you can use one of several software driver packages to configure its inputs. The first is Joystick Mapper, with which you should be able to configure most gaming controllers. The second is the Tattiebogle driver for Xbox controllers, which should work for both wired and wireless (using the receiver noted above) controllers.
A final couple of driver options for these controllers are GamePad Companion, which is available in the Apple App Store, and USB Overdrive, which has been a long-standing option for configuring USB input devices on the Mac platform. These last tools are useful especially if you have a controller that only has driver support for Windows. When connected to the Mac, the button inputs will be registered, and universal drivers like USB Overdrive should be able to recognize them and allow you to assign global or application-specific settings to them.
If you want to use PS3 controller wirelessly, you need to check Install Bluetooth driver during the configuration process. In addition, be sure to expand Choose Bluetooth dongles to install and select your device.
If your game controllers are not working in Linux, it's often a driver issue. But before opening up the terminal, try a few basic troubleshooting steps. By basic troubleshooting, I mean let's go through the gamepad equivalent of "unplug your router and plug it back in." Using a wireless gamepad? Check that your controller or battery is charged. Also, ensure that your game controller is connected.
If it's a Bluetooth gamepad, confirm that Bluetooth is enabled, and your pad is synced. Or if you're using a Bluetooth dongle, ensure that it's plugged in. For wired gamepads, make sure the USB cable is securely plugged in. Provided all is in order with these basic first checks, proceed to the more complex troubleshooting. Using the Debian-based RetroPie, my wireless Xbox 360 controller kept flashing. I tried driver fixes and toiled for about 30 minutes before realizing it was simply dying batteries. Learn from my mistakes and try a few simple fixes first.
Whereas the Xbox 360 wireless controller comes with its own USB hub, the PlayStation 3 controller does not. But since PS3 gamepads sport Bluetooth connectivity, you can still use these for Linux gaming. However, you'll need to add its drivers.
Some users report better compatibility with the Xpad Linux kernel driver. Not to be confused with the text editor, xPad. This driver functions with Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One controllers. On certain forums, community members cite Xpad as less buggy than the original xboxdrv. Additionally, it's more versatile. Luckily, most gamepads work on Linux out of the box. I use my Xbox 360 wireless controller with Linux on my Ubuntu 16.04 machine for gaming in Steam and playing titles from GOG. From the onset, I never even had to install drivers. I've also had great success using my wireless Xbox 360 gamepad with RetroPie and Recalbox. The latter, however, did require a driver tweak purely to alleviate an annoying flashing Xbox center button issue.

To connect your PS3 controller, you'll need to run ScpToolkit Setup.exe. Select Run Driver Installer, check Install DualShock 3 driver, and uncheck Install DualShock 4 driver. Next, select Choose DualShock 3 controllers to install.
